Expansion Joints

Expansion joints are designed and made to facilitate or smoothen traffic between two structures or parts of structures. They accommodate structural movements due to creep, shrinkage effects, temperature variations and deformations under the live loads the structure was designed for. They are mainly used for such purposes in bridge decks but are also suitable for and similarly used in other structures such as buildings (in parking facilities), airports (aprons and taxiways) and so on.

The company markets and installs joints of two main types;

  • ‘CIPEC’ Joints
    Freyssinet’s ‘CIPEC’ range of expansion joints are a suitable solution for all structural movements from 30mm to 1,000mm, regardless of the structure in which they are to be fitted and the installation or operating conditions.The range includes:
    JEP, WR and WOSd joints for Small Movement,
    Wd joints for Medium Movement,
    WP joints for Large Movement as well as,
    Joints of the CIMAC family for car parks.
  • ‘MULTIFLEX’ Joints
    Freyssinet ‘MULTIFLEX’ joints are flexible bridge expansion joints where thrust caused by the structure is taken up by deformation of the elastomeric parts. These joints are made of moulded elastomer elements, vulcanised and bonded to metal inserts designed to take up the running loads and distribute the attached forces. Supplied in modules of 2 metre (up to the S250 model) and 1 metre (S350), they are installed, connected together with a high-quality adhesive for a continuous, sealed and lasting joint.

Bearings connect a structure to its support and by deformation, should allow for the following:

  1. Transmission of normal forces
  2. Horizontal movements
  3. Rotation of the structure in any direction
  4. Transmission of horizontal forces (limited by design)

The bearing may also be of a model designed and provided with a sliding device/plane that will allow it to cater for large movements in the structure in which it is installed. These horizontal movements may also be locked in one or two axes.

The company markets two distinct types of bearings.

  • Elastomeric Bearings
    These are laminated bearings, made as an elastomeric rubber block reinforced with steel plates vulcanised into them when it is built. They are mainly used in the structures field for which these products have the advantage of long service life, reliability, freedom from maintenance, light weight and small dimensions as well as ease of installation.

    The same qualities also make them sought after in buildings where they may be applied in vibration filtration (noise reduction) or for sesmic isolation (acceleration reduction in earthquakes).

    Freyssinet PSC makes and market natural rubber based bearings to meet different national or international standards (BS, AASHTo etc) and welcomes enquiries on specific designs of such bearings.

    We also make/market other elastomeric bearing products such as plain rubber bearing pads and strips and rubber dowel caps.

  • Tetron CD Pot Bearings
    These bearings developed by Freyssinet (our parent company) since 1960, are composed of an elastomer disc confined in a cylindrical space, limited by hollow base (the pot) and a piston. The elastomer, behaving like an incompressible liquid, can transmit very high loads and absorbs structural rotations. They are made multi-directional when provided with a sliding plate and uni-directional when provided with a guide.

    Their advantages are;

    • Resistance to vertical loads, ranging from low to very high loads.
    • Transmission of high vertical and horizontal forces within small overall dimensions.
    • Capacity for high movement ranges in one or two horizontal directions with very low frictional coefficients and without elastic return force.
    • High rotational ranges along any horizontal axis with a low resisting moment.
    • Very high resistance to dynamic loads.

    They are available in Three (3) Types i.e,

    • Tetron CD / FX (Fixed)
    • Tetron CD / GL (Free Sliding)
    • Tetron CD / GG (Guided Sliding)

Developed by Freyssinet, a worldwide leader in prestressing, the Freyssibar systems comprises a wide range of threaded bars and associated anchoring, coupling and extension devices.

The bars are hot rolled from high strength alloyed steel, subsequently cold-worked by stretching and then threaded over their full length or at their extremities by cold rolling.

The fabrication process provides a high quality thread ensuring high fatigue resistance and a low susceptibility to stress corrosion.

The nature of the Freyssibar manufacturing method also ensures that every single bar is stress tested to 85% of the guaranteed ultimate tensile strength of the bar.

The geometry of the thread is specifically designed to ensure ease of use on site, providing fast, accurate and easy tightening.

They are suited for numerous applications, amongst which are;

  • Pre-stressing (permanent or temporary)
  • Holding down bolting for cranes, wind-turbines and so on.
  • Bridge construction methods (as lifting bars, tie-downs etc).
  • Ground and rock anchors, rock bolts for geotechnical work etc.
  • Implementation of heavy lifting systems.
  • Marine tie rods.

The bars are available in standard sizes of 26.5, 32, 36, 40 and 50mm but other ‘non-standard’ sizes can be produced on request.

Bars are available in maximum lengths of 11.8 metres. Beyond this length, extension sleeves allow bars to be connected together.
